GLPLD Makerspace
The Glenwood-Lynwood Public Library District (GLPLD, or “library”) Makerspace is located in the iCreate Lab. While the Makerspace shares space with the iCreate Lab, the equipment belonging to the Makerspace, i.e. the 3D printer and the laser cutter/engraver (at the time of writing), are to be treated as separate from the iCreate Lab.
The Makerspace is open Mondays from 3:30pm – 7:30pm for patrons to visit as long as a library staff member is present. The Lead Makerspace Coordinator is Information Services Librarian Caroline.
Policies
All patrons using the Makerspace must follow Patron Behavior/Conduct in addition to the policies outlined below. Patrons will also abide by the iCreate Lab policies when in the Makerspace.
Failure to follow any library policies may result in the patron’s loss of privilege to use the space and the equipment and software therein. The library reserves the right to deny access to the Makerspace and its services to any patron who does not abide by library policies.
3D Printer (Bambu Lab A1)

The Bambu Lab A1 3D printer is available for patron use. Patrons are not allowed to directly interact with the 3D printer in any way unless specifically instructed to do so by a library staff member. With the exception of library programming and one-on-one sessions, the extent to which patrons are allowed to interact with the 3D printer is limited to submitting files for printing and collecting their completed 3D prints.

Only GLPLD patrons may submit files for printing, and those patrons must be in good standing with the library. Files may be submitted at any time.
Adult patrons who are interested in submitting a file for printing must also possess a valid form of identification, such as a driver’s license or state ID, a.k.a. a valid form of identification that would also work when applying for a GLPLD library card.
Minors 12 and older are allowed to submit files for printing so long as they are in good standing with the library and their parent/guardian, regardless of whether or not they have a GLPLD library card in good standing or at all, provides a valid form of identification on the minor’s behalf. Parents/guardians are responsible for covering the cost of 3D prints in the event that the minor is unable to cover the cost themselves.
Patrons under the age of 12 may not submit files for printing.
All patrons who submit files for printing will have their information logged in a database to help library staff run the Makerspace, make informed adjustments as necessary, and ensure that appropriate penalties are upheld in response to any violations of any of the library’s policies.
Each patron may have one free print each calendar year. All other prints have a printing cost.
The free print may not exceed four hours total in printing time or be greater than the area of the printing bed. Free prints must be completable in one printing session, meaning that one file may not be broken up into multiple files and submitted for printing for the yearly courtesy print. The library will keep track of patron file submissions to determine if a patron has used their free print for the year or not.
All other prints will require patrons to pay for filament. Printing costs $0.20/gram of filament needed to create the print, which may include supports, color switching towers, etc. The cost of a print will be estimated upfront based on the projected filament required by the file, but the final cost will not be known until the print is complete and weighed.
Patrons will not be charged for prints that fail due to material defect or printer error. However, the library reserves the right to charge for printing and reprinting at a cost of $0.05/gram.
The library is not responsible for ensuring that files are fit for our 3D printer, be that due to size, print file quality, or any other reason. Patrons are responsible for reading and understanding the specifications and limitations of our 3D printer and choosing files for printing accordingly. The library will not make any modifications to 3D print files on behalf of patrons.
The 3D printer may not be used to create items that:
- are prohibited by local, state, or federal law;
- are unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or which pose an immediate threat to the well-being of others (including, in the view of staff, any items that resemble a weapon);
- are inappropriate for the library environment;
- are defamatory, invade a particular person’s privacy, or directly incite violence;
- violate another person’s property rights. For example, the printer may not be used to reproduce objects or materials that are subject to copyright, patent, or trademark protection.
GLPLD staff reserve the right to refuse print requests. If a file submission is refused, the library will provide written notice of the reasons for the refusal.
U.S. intellectual property laws, e.g., copyright, trademark, patent, etc., govern the creation, use, duplication or distribution of property protected by U.S. intellectual property laws. Patrons may not infringe intellectual property laws without the express written permission of the intellectual property right holders. It is the responsibility of the patron to know which intellectual property laws, if any, apply to their intended creation or design when submitting a file for printing.
Once a file has been submitted, a GLPLD staff member will contact the patron and confirm the file submission. If the submission is acceptable, the staff member will inform the patron of the estimated print cost/time. Files are printed in the order they are received. When the print is complete, the patron will be notified, and they will have 3 weeks to retrieve the item.
Any 3D print that is not picked up within that timeframe will be considered property of the library. Patrons are encouraged to reach out to the library if they know they will not be able to pick up their print in the allotted time so that staff can work with the patron to figure out an alternative time for pick up.
Prints that are ready for pick up will be held at the Circulation Desk. Patrons are required to pay for their prints at pick up, which will also be done at the Circulation Desk. Payment may be done by cash or card. Apple pay is not available at this time.
The library is not responsible for the misuse of and harm that may result from any items produced using library equipment.
The library is not responsible for any damage or harm that results from 3D prints once they are released to the patron.
